The Muse - Stella Tennant

In this series, we reflect on the role of a muse in the design of Lou Dungate knitwear. As a company, we embrace individuality, and champion the quiet inner confidence that allows the wearer to feel comfortable in simple and understated pieces. Knitting as a craft is communal and its roots are shared across the world. It is equally nostalgic and ever evolving. It is here that we pay tribute to the heritage of knitwear and the many people who wear it well.

“I am my own muse. I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better.”
― Frida Kahlo

“This post is a tribute to the icon and model Stella Tennant. As a young student, amongst the many fashion magazine cuttings I collated, I had pictures of Stella on my university bedroom walls - so endlessly striking and captivating I found her. Saddened to hear of her recent passing, I spent time reflecting upon her incredible career and have put together some images I found particularly memorable. Revered for her humble attitude, and a fellow craftswoman who often took her needlepoint to fashion shows, I hope that the memory of Stella instils kindness and humility in us all.”- Lou

“I wasn't trying to model. I'm not sure where it's going, apart from the pleasure of making beautiful things. I said I wasn't going to model after having my son. Now I just think, 'Fine, I enjoy the people a lot.' And I haven't found a better part-time job.”
